The Alliance for Useful Evidence is a network that champions smart evidence use in policy and practice across the UK and beyond.
The Alliance are currently writing a report to showcase how charities use evidence in their work – such as analysing existing datasets like Understanding Society to identify need, or learning from action research to improve volunteer retention. Evidence can include all types of methods, such as surveys, experiments, interviews or focus groups, as long as these are rigorously conducted – see this Alliance report for more on what good evidence looks like.
While there are a number of tools out there which support charities to use evidence to measure their impact (such as NPC’s Measuring Up!), this report aims to explore alternative uses of evidence, illustrating the range of types and sources of evidence that charities can make use of, and the ways in which evidence can benefit charities. It will be aimed primarily at senior practitioners in small to medium size charities, to demonstrate how research evidence can help run a better charity. The Alliance is looking for 2-3 case studies from charities in Wales to include in the report. They are particularly interested in charities of any size which have used evidence to:
- Improve staff or volunteer training
- Increase volunteer retention
- Get your cause addressed by policy makers
